keep left!: the Crown Range cometh.

20090615_newcar_0369

The Crown Range Road is as good a place as any to get comfortable driving a right hand drive car.  It is New Zealand’s highest paved road topping out at a sky high 1067m, a full 2 meters higher than its nearest competitor. It bullies its way up to its height with a series of progressively steeper and tighter turns and switchbacks. To say that I didn’t 20090607_In transit to NZ_0086enjoy myself would be a lie, I had a marvelous time, it was simply accompanied with the feeling of certain impending doom with each oncoming  car. The mantra that both Corrie and I continually repeated was simple yet effective: KEEP LEFT! keep left, keep left, please keep left. It was just a matter of time before my brain made the switch and everything felt proper again. I think that I am less of a hazard to myself and others now,  it’s great to have personal progress.                   20090613_first wanaka_028320090613_first wanaka_0289

The Guerrilla Gardening Homepage

The idea of improving urban spaces in small but poignant ways such as by installing illicit plant life is an an excellent way of re-engaging civic life in today’s modern cities.

I think that urban gardening should be looked at as having parity with Urban Art projects where by both have similar aims of creating spaces that are better for the human soul.

U.S. General Apologizes for Desecration of Koran

Again it seems to me that the thing that we should be focusing on here is that the Koran is becoming more of a central aim of the US military. We have to remember at all times that what’s important is the “hearts and minds” argument of our imperialist strategy. What better way to let the locals know that we are on their side than to literally have our sights set on their religion? Maybe they would be more receptive if that sight wasn’t on the barrel of our guns, but as far as a step in the right direction we’re certainly on the right path. Religious tolerance after all is the bed rock of a healthy democratic society. WE ARE THE CHANGE we want to see in the world.

The apology came quickly after the military confirmed that a soldier in Iraq had used a Koran for target practice.

U.S. Planning Big New Prison in Afghanistan

I think that the tendency of the U.S. to shift unamerican activities abroad is a great change from what we have done in the past. I for one would be terrified if there was a prison in my back yard that held people who had not been charged with any crime but still were thought to be a danger to society. It would obviously be flagrantly in opposition to common American values.  But thankfully Afghanistan is not in my back yard, it is in the back yard of people whose common values have become accustomed to such tyrannical practices for thousands of years. And afterall we are trying win there hearts and minds, what better way to do that then to give them something they can relate to, let them know we are in this together.  before you know it we’ll be hugging it out.

Officials are scaling back plans to shift prisoners into Afghan custody in a stark acknowledgment that the U.S. is likely to hold prisoners overseas for years.
