Philo on a hot tin roof
There is a great deal of me that believes philosophy to the most important thing a person can spend one’s time pursuing, the other small part of me believes philosophy best be left alone in the dark part of the library. I think the second voice may well be holding sway over me by way of the fact that I have spent too much time wrestling with and taking seriously “the barren lava of Sartrean and Heideggerian definitions of Being.” I now find myself, longing for the “sensible well-lit avenues of Anglo-American empiricism and pragmatism,” but with the sneaking suspicion that it is useless.
The article from which the above quotations were drawn, takes a very interesting perspective on the way that philosophy has permeated the modern culture of western states, and compared the differences, would you believe that it is more a part of contemporary German culture than our own? Shocking but true.
